SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - Two people are dead after a crash in Sangamon County overnight. 

Illinois State Police said the crash happened on Interstate 55 southbound at milepost 87.5, East Lake Shore Dr., around 1 a.m. Monday. 

ISP said a wrong way driver going northbound in the southbound lanes hit another vehicle. The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. 

The Sangamon County Coroner identified the victims as a 42-year-old woman from Wentzville, Missouri and a 51-year-old woman from Girard, Illinois.

Autopsies are scheduled to take place Monday. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. 

A passenger was taken to the hospital with injuries. 

I-55 southbound was closed but reopened around 6 a.m. 

The deaths remain under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner and the Illinois State Police.
