DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - Two people and three pets were rescued from a house fire in Danville Monday afternoon.
The Danville Fire Department was called to 40 Cavalier Ct. around 1:15 p.m. Firefighters found smoke coming from the peak and eaves of the roof.
Two people were home at the time of the fire. With help from firefighters, those people and three pets were safely evacuated.
Firefighters found the fire in the attic and were able to extinguish it.
One firefighter was injured by falling debris but refused medical treatment and returned to work.
Smoke and heat were ventilated by accessing the roof and cutting a vent hole using the department’s ladder truck. There was extensive damage in the attic space from the fire.
Crews worked to remove smoldering insulation from the attic and inspect the area for hot spots.
Frigid sub-zero temperatures and icy conditions made work extra difficult, the fire department said.
AMEREN Illinois crews responded to shut off the utilities to the structure.
Arrow ambulance provided a crew for EMS standby.
Danville Public Works responded to the area of the fire as well, to salt the streets that became ice covered because of fire firefighting operations.
Fire crews were on scene for three hours.
The cause of the fire is listed as accidental, caused by the house's fireplace and chimney.
The house was turned back over to the owner after fire crews finished.
The fire department said the homeowners did have smoke alarms and were alerted to the fire because of the alarm.
