Road, street, pavement, traffic, crash

(WAND) - Drivers in the Champaign area were being urged to avoid part of Interstate 74 after a multiple vehicle crash Friday morning.

Illinois State Police units were on the scene of the three-vehicle crash near milepost 179 just after 6 a.m. Police said the crash involved a semi-truck, an SUV and another car.

Lane blockages forced authorities to shut down a stretch of I-74 eastbound. Traffic in the area was at a standstill and quickly backing up.

Police said motorists were being diverted at Exit 179 onto I-57 north and south. However, both ramps from I-57 back onto I-74 eastbound were also blocked at the time, limiting access through the area.

In addition, the Prairieview Road on-ramp to I-74 eastbound was closed. I-74 eastbound traffic was now being diverted onto US RT 150 at Exit 174.

ISP said injuries were reported. It is unclear how many people were hurt, or how severe their injuries were.

The road was reopened just after 8 a.m. Police said it is still unclear what caused the crash.
