DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Millikin University and Decatur Memorial Hospital are launching a new nursing scholars program. Nursing students in their junior or senior year can apply to the program, and Millikin staff will select six applicants.

"Once the nursing scholars are selected, they will have working time here at Decatur Memorial Hospital, including extra education and relationship time here at the hospital," said Tanya Andricks, president and CEO of Decatur Memorial Hospital. "They'll receive $50,000 in support ... Upon the completion of their nursing program and upon their graduation, they will come to work at Decatur Memorial Hospital for three years."

Andricks explained that many healthcare facilities have struggled to hire enough nurses in recent years. She hopes nurses in the program will connect with hospital staff and fall in love with the culture there.

Millikin President Dean Pribbenow said the program will build on the training students already receive through Millikin. It could be the connection needed to keep talented students in Decatur.

"It's connecting our students with opportunities that not only enhance their education, but also meet critical needs in the community," said Pribbenow. "We know, of course, that there is a growing demand for skilled nurses, and partnerships like this not only attract talent, but they keep talent where it's most needed."

The program is open to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in nursing or master's entry into nursing practice programs at Millikin. Those selected will receive up to $50,000 in scholarship or tuition assistance.
