In two reports aired on WAND last week we looked back over the past year at the controversy surrounding the site which was operated by Central Illinois Public Service (CIPS) in the late 1800s and early 1900s to produce gas for heating and lighting homes and businesses.  Ameren took over the site when it merged with CIPS.

Some residents expressed concern with a remediation project at the site in 2023 which created an odor that those residents felt might create health concerns.  Ameren stopped work in the fall after receiving a stop work order from the Illinois EPA. Drilling was halted and has not resumed.

Ameren has added the following information regarding the site:

"It should be noted that Ameren is managing the manufactured gas plant (MGP) remediation under the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act, otherwise known as Superfund. Ameren is in compliance with all state and federal requirements for our remediation project. Superfund projects undergo review by USEPA every five years to assure progress and protectiveness of human health and the environment. USEPA completed its most recent five-year review for the Taylorville MGP site in July 2024 and concluded that the remedy currently protects human health and the environment."
