EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND)— 18 people are without a home after a kitchen fire at an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Hillside Drive.Â
Around 4:00 p.m. on Oct. 27, the crews with the EFD arrived to flames coming out of an apartment complex with people trapped inside.
Firefighters rescued two people from a second-floor apartment across from the unit on fire. They were taken to the local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The fire was put out within 45 minutes, but crews remained on the scene until 7:30 p.m. to investigate.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Effingham Fire Department are investigating the cause of the fire.
The department estimates the current damages to be around $750,000.
