DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Extreme summer heat is returning to the area, and Central Illinois residents may want to use extra caution if working outside.

“We get people in here who even have temperatures as high as 106, 107,” stated Dr. Christopher Atashian, MD, who is Medical Director of the Emergency Department at HSHS St. Mary’s. “So people can get very sick from this. Even if you’re young and healthy.”

Atashian tells WAND News heat-related illness can “creep up” on you quickly, sometimes in as little as 30-60 minutes.

Atashian suggests remaining well hydrated and avoiding alcohol.

He also suggested avoiding wearing dark clothing, not overexerting yourself and taking breaks.
