MT. ZION, Ill. (WAND) — An ATV accident killed a boy and severely injured another near Mt. Zion on Sunday afternoon, according to the Macon County Sheriff's Office.
Around 12:15 p.m., MSO deputies responded to an area of Fort Daniel Road for an ATV accident.
According to the department a 43-year-old man was driving a four-passenger ATV vehicle while pulling an innertube with two boys. The man turned down a hill, the innertube slid out around the outside of the turn, and collided with a large boulder.
The Mt. Zion Fire Department and Abbott Ambulance responded and both boys were taken by ambulance to Decatur Memorial Hospital.Â
At the hospital, one of the boys died from his injuries. The other was taken to HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield for life-threatening injuries.
As of 6:30 a.m. Monday morning, the Macon County Sheriff's Office told WAND News that the second child was still fighting for his life in the hospital.
The accident is under investigation.Â
