URBANA, Ill. (WAND) -- An inmate who was found unresponsive early Saturday morning in the Champaign County Jail and later died has been identified.

Jail staff discovered the inmate around 4:45 a.m. Saturday and immediately began life-saving efforts. EMS and the Urbana Fire Department also responded, but the inmate was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The man was identified as 56-year-old David Henley of Penfield. He was pronounced dead in the ER at 5:32 a.m.

The coroner said the death appears to be the result of a medical emergency. The Illinois State Police have been asked to investigate, which is standard procedure for in-custody deaths.

Henley had been in custody since May 16 on domestic battery-related charges.
