DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Police are searching for a woman after an SUV caught fire in Decatur Friday night.
According to the Decatur Police Department, officers responded to the 3100 block of North Woodford Street just after 7 p.m. near a strip of businesses, including the DMV, after reports of a vehicle on fire in a parking lot in the area.
Police said that based on information they received, a 24-year-old man was driving the car with a 24-year-old woman in the passenger seat, when the woman started pulling on the steering wheel. According to the police department, the two were in an on-again off-again relationship for several years.
DPD said the man pulled over and told the woman to get out of the vehicle, but she refused, so the man called several family members to try and mediate the situation.
As family members were arriving, police said the woman jumped into the back seat of the vehicle, gathered some items, got out and started running away. At the same time, a fire started inside the SUV and started to spread, and within minutes, it was fully engulfed in flames.
Officers are looking for the woman to interview her about the incident, but no charges have been files. The Decatur Police Department and Decatur Fire Department are still investigating.
