SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A security officer at Springfield Memorial Hospital was recognized as a hero after saving a woman's life last week. 

Memorial Health said that Caleb Patrick was patrolling an SMH facility July 29 when she saw a woman lying on nearby railroad tracks as a train approached. 

Patrick rushed to the tracks and pulled her to safety, just as the train whizzed by around 30 seconds later. 

He was honored Wednesday during a ceremony at the Edgar J. Memorial Learning Center. According to Memorial Health, Patrick was presented a civilian certificate of appreciation for his efforts. 

"I looked at it as no big deal. I never knew what I would do in that situation until I was put in it," Patrick said in a statement. 

The organization said Patrick has been with Memorial Health since February 2025.
