Boy Scouts group in Illinois ready to admit girls

ILLINOIS (WAND) – A Boy Scouts of America group in central Illinois will start allowing girls to join the organization.

A press release from the Prairielands Council, an organization that serves seven central Illinois counties, explains how the group will set up leadership. It says its Cub Scout Packs will have male and female leadership in dens separated by gender.

The Boy Scouts of America announced plans to allow girls into its ranks in late 2017.

“Cub Scouts is about having fun while learning new things like first aide, team work, leadership skills and appreciating the outdoors,” the release said. “Each level of Cub Scouts is age specific and designed to provide experiences to help the child grow both mentally and physically.”

Prairielands Council leadership says girls have been part of Boy Scouts for years through venturing and exploring programs, which it says are meant to teach people how to be responsible adults.

The organization serves scouts in Champaign, Ford, Iroquois, Piatt, Douglas, Edgar and Vermilion counties in Illinois, along with parts of Fountain and Vermilion counties in Indiana.
