A teenager is dead after a shooting Friday involving police officers. Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup says 15-year-old Kiwane Carrington of Champaign was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m. Friday in the Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department.
The Champaign Police Department says it happened at 900 W. Vine around 1:20 p.m. Friday when a neighbor reported multiple subjects trying to get into a nearby residence through doors and windows. Police say when officers arrived, two subjects confronted them. Police say the officers identified themselves as police and both subjects disobeyed the officers' commands to get on the ground and struggled with two of the responding officers. During the struggle, police say a weapon was discharged resulting in the death of one of the subjects. Police say the subject received immediate aid from officers at the scene and was transported for treatment.
A 15-year-old juvenile was arrested at the scene and and faces a preliminary charge of Residential Burglary.
One of the involved officers is Champaign Police Chief R.T. Finney. He was treated and released from Carle for injuries he suffered in the struggle. Police say the discharged round was not fired by Chief Finney.
As standard procedure, the Champaign Police Department requested investigative assistance from the Champaign County Multi-jurisdictional Investigative Team. Officers from the following agencies are taking part in this investigation: University of Illinois Police, Urbana Police, Rantoul Police, Illinois State Police and Champaign County Sheriff's Office. The Illinois State Police have been designated as the lead agency for this investigation.
