MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – Out in an open field with nowhere to shelter, Derek Beyers watched a tornado approach.
"At first I saw what I thought was a dust devil and then it got bigger and stronger," he said.
He was down in a hole working on drainage tiles in a farm field west of Blue Mound and Stonington. As the tornado moved across N 1600 East Rd, Beyers got nervous.
"We've worked in a lot of storms, seeing them come up on us," he said. "But we moved about as quick as we ever moved on that one."
The storm cut a path near the Christian County-Macon County border. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The Macon County Sheriff's Office says there is no confirmed damage at this time — something Beyers says is very lucky.
"I'm just glad everyone is safe," he said.
