MCLURE, Ill. (WAND) - An Illinois man drowned after police said he ran from them when they tried to confront him about a domestic battery. 

The Alexander County Sheriff's Office requested the Illinois State Police to investigate the death in rural Alexander County. 

On Monday at 4:30 p.m., an Alexander County Sheriff's deputy was called for a domestic battery in McLure. When deputies tried to take a man into custody, they said he ran. Deputies conducted a search and found the man in a creek near Grapevine Trail and Levee Road. Emergency responders were not able t reach the man before he drowned. 

The investigation is active and ongoing.
