MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — A man who police said admitted to beating his mother with a hammer pleaded guilty to murder charges and was sentenced this week.

Douglas R. Reed, 31, was arrested in February after a 60-year-old woman was found with blunt force head trauma in Mattoon.

Police identified her son, Reed, as a person of interest and found him in Moultrie County with his mother's car.

Mattoon police said that during an interview, Reed "admitted to striking his mother several times to the head with a hammer in the early hours of February 7th."

On Tuesday, Reed pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 58 years in prison, to be served at 100%.
