MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — A man has been arrested after his mother was found dead in Mattoon Friday morning.
Mattoon police said that a 60-year-old woman was found with blunt force head trauma at a home in the 2900 block of Oak Ave. After an initial investigation, her son Douglas R. Reed, 31, was identified as a person of interest.
Reed was located in Moultrie County by Mattoon police later that morning. MPD said that during an interview, Reed "admitted to striking his mother several times to the head with a hammer in the early hours of February 7th."
Police said that Reed told them he then took his mother's car and left the area.
Reed was processed on a charge of first degree murder and taken to the Coles County Safety and Detention Center.
