HILLSBORO, Ill. (WAND) - Two men were arrested Wednesday evening following an attempted burglary at an ATM in Hillsboro.
At approximately 7:27 p.m. on November 26, Hillsboro Police responded to an ATM alarm at Carlinville National Bank, 549 S. Main St.
Upon arrival, officers found the ATM appeared secure and no immediate signs of criminal activity. However, the bank’s security alarm company later determined that unknown individuals had opened the ATM and attempted to manipulate it.
Hillsboro police said that bank staff contacted their security officer, who provided photographs of a suspect vehicle. Using the images, a Hillsboro officer entered the vehicle description into a nearby License Plate Reader (LPR) system, capturing a license plate that investigators suspected was stolen, originating from Morrisonville, IL. Surrounding law enforcement agencies were notified.
A Litchfield Police Department officer located a vehicle matching the description at the Mr. Fuel Truck Stop #4 on Corvette Drive in Litchfield, IL.
A Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy assisted, taking one suspect into custody. The second suspect fled on foot toward RP Lumber, where he was later found hiding in a warehouse and was arrested.
The suspects were identified as:
- Erik Frank Cordero Gomez, 24
- Jose Salas-Lozada, 33
Both men were taken to the Montgomery County Jail and booked on local charges of attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools.
Gomez also faces a resisting arrest charge from Litchfield Police, while Salas-Lozada had a federal arrest warrant for aggravated battery of a federal officer.
Authorities report both men are believed to be from Venezuela and are undocumented.
The Hillsboro Police Department continues to investigate the incident with assistance from local, state, and federal agencies.
