CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND Weather) — A wake low is causing damaging wind gusts over parts of central Illinois, primarily from Champaign county and points east.

In this type of setup, the pressure begins to rise just behind an exiting area of showers and thunderstorms.

Wake Low Formation

Meanwhile, sinking air that is compressed and warming in the wake of these storms — typically 30-50 miles in the storm's wake — creates an area of lowering pressure.

The difference in pressure between these two areas creates strong, gusty winds that can produce damage as air travels rapidly from higher to lower pressure.
