Life After Prison: Kewanee Life Skills Re-Entry Center

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) is visiting the Decatur Women's Correctional Center Wednesday.

Davis said his goal is to highlight the facility's programs, reduce recidivism rates and help inmates transition back into society.

The Moms and Babies program at the Decatur Correctional Center lets moms who are behind bars keep their newborns with them for a certain amount of time.

While in prison, women participate in training and get continuous case management, community visits, and service referrals once they are released.

The FIRST STEP Act was passed by the House in June. Davis said the bill is a first step towards reforming the federal prison system.

The bill offers programs to inmates that include: vocational training, education support, substance abuse treatment, mental health care, anger-management courses, faith-based initiatives, and other resources proven to lower the chance of recidivism.
