DECATUR, Ill. (WAND)- Over 20 different union groups passed candy to a packed crowd lining Downtown Decatur this morning. The parade, hosted by local union groups, is a family-favorite event for many.Â
But, Labor Day is about more than just a day off and an ending to summer. It marks a long history fighting for labor rights.Â
"Labor Day is very important because it has a rich history of the people that came before us fighting for a 40-hour work week, fighting for a living wage, fighting for weekends off and holidays," said Michelle Wayne, Treasurer for IBEW Local 146. "We want to honor the people that came before is and help the community realize this is an important day."Â
Many parade participants shared their desire for their work to inspire the young generations at the parade. This includes the importance of labor work in the local communities, such as demolition, building roads, and fixing bridges.Â
"You're seeing a lot of high school are putting trade programs back into schools and letting kids know and children know that college isn't for everybody and you can still make a great living by getting into a trade," said Joe Riley, President of Laborer's Local 159. Â
The parade was followed by a picnic.Â
