DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Decatur Memorial Hospital is donating an advanced ultrasound machine to Scovill Zoo to help with veterinary care.
The machine will allow for advanced imaging of animals.
The donated ultrasound machine uses soundwaves to create detailed internal images. That will let zookeepers and veterinary staff assess health conditions without causing any pain or distress to the animals. Previously, many animals required transport for diagnostic imaging.
“The gift of this ultrasound machine is a true game changer for Scovill Zoo,” said Heather Purdeu, director of Scovill Zoo. “We can now provide prompt, precise care for our animals on-site, whether we are scanning the tiny guinea pigs or the majestic mountain lions.”
The ultrasound probes allow for examination of vasculature, major organs, small parts and soft tissues.
Veterinary specialists from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, who provide care at Scovill Zoo, will use the machine to expand diagnostic procedures.
“We were able to donate this equipment thanks to DMH’s continued investment in innovative technology,” said Dave Overlot, director of radiology at DMH. “That investment allows us to take older equipment out of service, and when we do, we look for ways we can use it to support our community.”
“Our mission at Memorial is to improve lives and build stronger communities through better health,” said Sarah Minott, radiology manager at Decatur Memorial Hospital. “Our community includes the incredible creatures at Scovill Zoo. This donation will help the zoo support their well-being and health.”
