DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A resolution at Decatur City Council could lead to the annexation of two parcels of land which could be used to boost the economy. On Tuesday, Decatur City Council will vote on an annexation agreement between the city and McLeod properties.
City Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe said that once annexed, the land could prove to be a great spot for future business development. "It is a prime location for development. And so by the city annexing it, it helps us when we try to pursue businesses that are coming to town."
Moore Wolfe explained that the land is ready for use, making it more appealing for potential businesses. "It's much easier to recruit a business or to win a possible project if you're site ready, meaning you've got water, you've got electricity, you've got good access to an interstate."
Communications Coordinator Ryan Huffer told WAND News that although they don't currently have any proposed projects, he anticipates that it will be a prime spot for development.
Moore Wolfe said that they have been working on developing the surrounding area to be well-suited for industrial use. "This is in our prime industrial corridor, which we have been working really hard to develop, in recent years. But it's always been the plan."
Additionally, McLeod will also benefit. McLeod properties is currently building a warehouse on East Mound Road. As per the annexation agreement, permit fees will be capped off at $50,000 in return for the land. "It is a win win. It's a win for the developer. It is a win for the community. It's a win for everybody," said Moore Wolfe.
The Decatur City Council meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in the Civic Center.
