Discovering Central Illinois: Effingham's Cross at the Crossroads

America's largest cross stands tall in Effingham near highways 57 and 70.

The Cross at the Crossroads stands at 198 feet tall and 113 feet wide. The cross is made out of more than 18- tons of steel and is anchored in cement.

There are monuments for each of the Ten Commandments surrounding the cross, where visitors can push a button to hear inspirational audio homilies. The Cross at the Crossroads is located on I-57 off of exit 159.

"It's a very inspirational site," says Delaine Donaldson, the President of the Effingham County Cultural Center & Museum Association. "A lot of people traveling the interstate stop and visit that. It's nearly 200 feet tall. It has a lot of related items on the ground next to the cross. So if you want inspiration, you can be inspired there."

The giant cross was built in 2001 and cost more than $1 million. According to the Cross Foundation, the organization that built the Cross at the Crossroads, more than 20 million people drive past the cross each year.
