WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says banks should each publish a one-page listing of the fees and terms of their checking accounts to make them easier for consumers to understand.

Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, joined Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island in sending a letter Thursday to the acting head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Durbin suggests banks adopt a form designed by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

The form includes lines for the minimum deposit needed to open an account, fee amounts and processing policies.

Durbin says that the financial protection bureau created last year should also consider forcing banks to make account terms clearer.

This week, Bank of America scrapped plans to add a $5 monthly fee for debit card purchases after customers complained.
