CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Champaign Unit 4 school leaders said Monday that it is taking action to better support special needs students, staff and families.
The declaration came after an audit of the district found shortcomings in support for teachers and kids.
Unit 4 says its special education department will be fully staffed for the start of the school year and a new manager has been added. The district is also reallocating some of its staff to the special ed department, with support teams for autism and literacy.
"As a district, we recognize that we have fallen short in meeting the needs of some of our students, families and staff, and that is not acceptable. Every student deserves a high quality compassionate support, and every family and staff member should feel heard, respected and safe when raising concerns," said Unit 4 Interim Superintendent Dan Casillas.Â

The auditor will continue working with the district on additional reforms.Â
