ROCHESTER, Ill. (WAND) — Rochester CUSD 3A is creating opportunities for STEM education for every student in the district.
From kindergarten through 12th grade, students are able to take part in various projects and clubs to create and explore.
Stephen a 4th grade student, said, "I think it's really fun. I love to learn new stuff that's cool and I get to show off to my friends sometimes, so I really like it."
Students at the Intermediate School were able to try their hand at engineering. There are currently several construction projects taking place at the school and the students were able to draw inspiration from the work they see being done to build a bridge out of everyday materials.
Sheril Flynn, the Director of Technology for Rochester Schools, said, "The administrators have read a book, 'Iggy Peck, Architect', and the students will watch that and then they will be put into pairs to construct a bridge out of Q-tips and making tape."
After they were put into teams to build their bridge, the kids went head-to-head to see whose bridge would be able to hold the most pennies.Â
"We look to see that the students are working together collaboratively. We look for creativity and we hope that students enjoy these types of activities."
This project specifically taught the students about teamwork. The opportunities presented to the students overall push the kids out of their comfort zones to learn to solve problems and give STEM education a shot.
Zach, a 5th grade student, said, "I'd say if you're scared it's okay, but you're going to love it like it's fun and it helps you learn so it's going to be awesome."
While some of the students are young and others are preparing to walk across the stage at graduation, the STEM programs are preparing students for their futures while encouraging them to become lifelong learners.Â
Gabriella, a 6th grade student, said, "It can help your academics and stuff depending on what you want to be when you grow up."
The exposure to these opportunities along with encouragement from staff members is building student confidence one piece at a time, just like the bridges they worked so hard to construct.
Rochester Schools will be taking part in the Central Illinois STEM Fair on April 9th at the Rochester Athletic Facility from 5:30-8:30 PM. The event will be free for all teachers and families with school aged children to attend.Â
