Family and friends hold vigil for Keith Brewer

DECATUR, IL (WAND) - Emotions ran deep at Keith Brewer's vigil. It was held at the same location where he died. Dozens gathered to light candles in his memory. Just days after turning 29, Decatur Police said he died on Labor Day morning from his gunshot wounds. Gwen Emery, who lives in the neighborhood, said she was there when Brewer took his last breath.

"I was trying to comfort him." Emery recalled. "The ambulance, the police, they're on the way. Just try to hold on."

She described the moment shocking and she expressed how he's still reeling in his death. Emery said it hurt seeing him die. She said she didn't know Brewer at all. Later on, Emery discovered how much Brewer meant to others. His family said he was on a path to getting his life together.

Brewer was described as a loving father to his children. Those who knew of him said he wanted to be a positive influence in his community.

"He was a person that played football," Kisha Taylor said, who brought flowers to his vigil. "He was a ladies man, a good looking man, a well dressed man. A talented young man."

Knowing Brewer was killed is a void that will take time to fill. Those who were at his vigil said he [Brewer] was loved.
