RANTOUL, Ill. (WAND) — A man is charged with murdering his own son in a Sunday shooting.
Robert McKinney Jr., 28, of Rantoul died after being shot in the 700 block of East Sangamon Ave. at 2:22 a.m.
According to Champaign County Coroner Steve Thuney, McKinney Jr. was pronounced dead in the critical care unit at Carle Foundation Hospital at 7:51 a.m. Sunday.
Rantoul Police said investigators later spoke to Robert McKinney Sr., who reported a physical struggle had happened between himself and Robert Mckinney Jr. During the fight, a gun was discharged, and Robert Mckinney Jr. was struck.
Robert Mckinney Sr. was also transported to an area hospital where he was evaluated and treated for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. After being medically evaluated Robert Mckinney Sr. was arrested and transported to the Champaign County Jail where he is being held for the offense of Murder.
