FBI: Mailed explosives triggered 'full strength' investigation

(WAND) – The FBI is releasing more information about suspicious packages sent to Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton and others.

A statement on the FBI’s website says the packages were received between Monday and Wednesday in New York and Washington, D.C. They came in manila envelopes with bubble wrap inside and listed a return address of “DEBBIE WASSERMAN SHULTZ”. Investigators say each package had “potentially destructive devices” in them.

The Associated Press reported the devices in the envelopes were suspected bombs. There were no explosions and no injuries.

“This investigation is of the highest priority for the FBI. We have committed the full strength of the FBI’s resources and, together with our partners on our Joint Terrorism Task Forces, we will continue to work to identify and arrest whoever is responsible for sending these packages,” the statement said.

The envelopes were sent to the following people:

  • George Soros
  • Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
  • Former President Barack Obama
  • Former CIA Director John Brennan, care of CNN
  • Former Attorney General Eric Holder

The FBI says the package meant for Holder was rerouted to the Florida return address. The organization says it has not ruled out other packages possibly getting mailed out.

The FBI says people should never handle suspicious packages. Suspicious activity should be reported to the 911 or police in the place where it is seen.
