ALTAMONT, IL (WAND) - Sitting near Schmidt park and conveniently standing in front of the city water tower; is the dairy bar. The red and white building people are all too familiar with. People believe the Schultz Dairy Bar is a staple in the Altamont community. Returning customers describe the place as a space to get good food with a smile. Plus, the customer service makes them feel at home.Â
The Dairy Bar has been around since 1957. It's had a number of owners. Kevin Schultz' parents used to be one of them and he's been eating there for as long as he can remember.Â
"Its a mom and pop type shop," Schultz said. "I can remember being a young kid coming here and this was the place for ice cream."Â
Since the, Schultz and his wife Carrie are the proud owners. So much has changed since the days of selling custard. Nowadays the Dairy Bar has an indoor buffet and they make hamburgers. Schultz said most of their food is homemade. That's something customers take pride in, especially on Tuesdays.Â
"We're known for our hand breaded pork tenderloin special," Schultz chimed.Â
Its described as a giant sandwich. The tenderloin is so big, it covers the plate. Customers jokingly said it takes three days to finish that with fries and a drink. Schultz said he's a tenderloin fan himself but he can't eat the whole meal. As the Dairy Bar is on the verge of celebrating 30 years of service, people of Altamont expressed their sense of pride in having a Dairy Bar.Â
