Governor Rauner Signs Police Dog Retirement Bill

Springfield- Governor Bruce Rauner signed the Police Dog Retirement Act into law Saturday.

The bill allows police dogs to stay with the officer who trained them after retirement.

"They bond with the officer that trains them and when they are at an age where they can't perform their duties anymore to give them a chance to retire with the officer who trains them and be apart of that officers families. It's a wonderful opportunity. It's very fair and appropriate, they don't have to go off to some shelter or some unknown place they can go to the officers home who they trained with. It's a wonderful, right thing to do" said Governor Rauner.

The bill was signed during a ceremony at the State Fair on First Responders Day. Governor Rauner also signed two other bills to honor First Responders Day. The first was a bill that designates the second week of April as National Public Safety Telecommunicators' Week. As well as a bill that aims at protecting all emergency medical personnel.Â
