House fire being investigated as suspicious

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Fire officials say a house fire in Decatur is being ruled suspicious. 

Smoke could be seen billowing from a house Thursday night near the intersection of North College and West Packard streets with flames coming from the roof and at least one side. Firefighters took a ladder to upper floors at one point during their response.

According to the owner, a break-in the night before the fire happen. 

Fire Chief Jeff Abbott said he had several crews on the scene helping put out the flames. 

"(We) had most of the on duty crews there last night and pretty much just kept it from spreading to the church next door and controlling it until we could contain it. The house is a total loss it'll need to be torn down."

The fire spread so quickly that firefighters had to evacuate the home. 

No injuries were reported.Â
