DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Early Saturday morning, Decatur firefighters arrived at the corner of Richmond Court and Maryland St. in Decatur to find the back of a house engulfed in flames.

In a news release, Deputy Chief of Operations Neil Elder said the crews arrived at the house around 4:20 a.m. and reported heavy fire in the back. 

The crew said that after searching the home, they determined that no one was home at the time of the fire. The person who lived at the house was in the hospital at the time of the fire. They will be without a home due to the fire.

Elder said in his report an AMR ambulance was there just in case, and crew members from Ameren secured the gas and electric utilities.

It took a little over an hour to get the fire under control. It was determined the fire started on the back porch and kitchen area. It took four engines, one ladder truck, 15 fire crews, and 3 Chief Officers to get the fire under control around 5:25 a.m.

The fire is still under investigation by a Decatur Fire Department investigator.
