ILLINOIS (WAND) – Troopers say they cited hundreds of drivers for speeding during Illinois Speed Awareness Day.

The results show Illinois State Police gave out 697 citations for speeding and another 566 written warnings during a 24-year-old reported period. Illinois Speed Awareness Day was July 25.

“These enforcement efforts and the hard work of our officers were instrumental in preventing injuries and saving lives,” said ISP Director Leo P. Schmitz. “Please help avoid a tragedy by obeying the posted speed limit at all times.”

Troopers didn’t just hand out speeding violations. They also gave out 350 citations and 675 written warnings for other traffic violations.

Gov. Bruce Rauner created Illinois Speed Awareness Day to make sure drivers understand the importance of safe driving. State police gave 15 statewide presentations in an effort to educate the public on speeding dangers.

State police also warned drivers about the “Fatal 4 Violations” that often lead to deadly crashes. They include driving under the influence, speeding, failing to wear and seatbelt and distracted driving.
