UPDATE: Police said the road was reopened around 8:05 a.m.
(WAND) - Drivers in the Champaign area were being urged to avoid part of Interstate 74 after a multiple vehicle crash Friday morning.
Illinois State Police units were on the scene of the crash near milepost 179 just after 6 a.m. Lane blockages forced authorities to shut down a stretch of I-74 eastbound. Traffic in the area was at a standstill and quickly backing up.
Police said motorists were being diverted at Exit 179 onto I-57 north and south. However, both ramps from I-57 back onto I-74 eastbound were also blocked at the time, limiting access through the area.
In addition, the Prairieview Road on-ramp to I-74 eastbound was closed. I-74 eastbound traffic was now being diverted onto US RT 150 at Exit 174.
There is no word yet on injuries. The road was reopened just after 8 a.m.
