SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Private insurance companies in Illinois can currently limit patients to four rounds of IVF treatment. Although, a bill heading to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk could expand private insurance coverage for all forms of fertility treatment.

State lawmakers removed the cap on infertility coverage for state employees last year. However, this plan could ensure all insurance companies are allowing patients to have more cycles covered.

"The decision to undergo additional rounds of IVF should be left to a medical provider and his or her patient and not dictated by financial limitations," said Rep. Margaret Croke (D-Chicago).

The proposal would require insurance companies to cover expenses for standard fertility preservation and follow-up services regardless of medical necessity or diagnosis of infertility.

Croke noted that the live birth success rate jumps to 65% for women who complete six cycles of IVF treatment. Sponsors and advocates have frequently stressed that donor eggs and associated fees can cost anywhere from $35,000 to $60,000.

Senate Bill 773 passed out of the House on a 90-17 vote. The measure previously passed out of the Senate on a 50-1 vote.

"While other states restrict access to reproductive care, we are committed to remaining a safe haven where those seeking to start or grow their family can access the treatments needed to do so," said Sen. Cristina Castro (D-Elgin). "It can be difficult to talk about this issue, but shedding a light on the struggles people face - particularly women of color - is necessary to address barriers."

If approved by Pritzker, the legislation would take effect on January 1, 2026.
