CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The city of Champaign has signed an agreement with Homefield Energy to be the next electricity supplier for the city's Municipal Electric Aggregation (MEA) program.
The MEA program allows the city to negotiate a bulk-buy, discounted rate for electricity supply for residents and small businesses through a bidding process.
The city said eligible properties will be sent information letters from Homefield informing them of the impending switch over, with instructions on how to opt out of the program. After the opt-out period is over, accounts will automatically switch over to Homefield.
Ameren will continue to distribute electricity and bill customers for their power use, and there is no need for utility workers or city employees to come to homes or businesses to make changes, according to the city.
Homefield's contracted base rate is $0.10899 per kWh and will be effective starting with September 2026 delivery through May 2027. There is also an optional 100% renewable energy contracted base rate of $0.11120 per kWh for the period. Exact pricing for next summer's rates has not been determined yet.
