TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — Three Christian County Sheriff's Office staff members were honored for their heroic actions in preventing an incarcerated person from committing suicide in October.
Deputy Sergeant Alan Bailey, Court Security Deputy Robert Campbell and Correctional Officer Malorie Bergschneider were honored at the Christian County Board meeting on Wednesday.
The sheriff's office said on October 27, Sgt. Bailey and Deputy Campbell were escorting two incarcerated people from a courtroom to an elevator when one of them suddenly turned toward the third floor railing in an apparent suicide attempt.
The officers secured the person before they could fall and pulled them safely onto the landing. The sheriff's office said Sgt. Bailey also made sure the incarcerated person received mental-health attention and offered words of support.
Later that day during a 15-minute suicide-segregation check, Officer Bergschneider saw the same imprisoned person trying to hang themselves. She immediately called for help, removed the noose and restored their breathing.Â
"These staff members exemplified extraordinary courage, composure, and commitment to preserving life under pressure," said Chief Deputy Jim Baker. "Their swift, professional actions reflect the highest standards of our agency and our utmost commitment to the preservation of human life."
All three staff members will receive the Christian County Sheriff's Office Lifesaving Recognition Award. Additionally, all three have been formally nominated to the Illinois Sheriffs' Association for Deputy of the Year and Correctional Officer of the Year honors in recognition of their dedication to life safety.
