Man to serve 95 years for shooting ISP Trooper

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A man convicted of shooting an Illinois State Trooper has been sentenced.

A jury convicted Cristobal Santana in August 2025 for shooting ISP Trooper Kody Chapman-Green in October 2023.

Santana was sentenced on Friday, April 3, to a total of 95 years after being found guilty on all counts including attempted first degree murder.

Santana shot trooper Kody Chapman-Green in October 2023. ISP said Chapman-Green was conducting a traffic stop when Santana got out of his car and started shooting. The trooper's dash camera showed the moments shots were fired. ISP said Santana hit the trooper in the head several times with his gun, then returned to his car and drove away.

ISP Director Brendan Kelly shared a statement saying, "Every day, ISP officers are in harm's way, selflessly facing danger and making personal sacrifices for our safety. When an officer is attacked, it is not just an attack o that officer, it is an attack on the rule of law and the fabric of our society. The efforts of gthe prosecutors and the court's sentence show the severity of the attack on Trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green and sends a clear message that violence against those who protect our communities will face justice."
