Charleston house fire

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WAND) — A family escaped, but their pet died in a house fire in Charleston Saturday. 

On Saturday, September 13, at 1:09 p.m., the Charleston Fire Department was called to a fire at 1007 Douglas.

Smoke from the fire was visible from several blocks away.

There was heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the home and the roof.

The occupants had already gotten outside when firefighters arrived, but a pet cat was still inside.

Firefighters used multiple hose lines to put out the fire. The cat was found during a secondary search of the home but unfortunately did not survive.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire department cleared the scene at 5 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
