LERNA, Ill. - The Lincoln Fire Protection District battled multiple fires at the same time in Coles County Saturday.
Firefighters first responded to a fire at an unoccupied home just before 12:30 p.m. on Park Street in Lerna, IL. Crews found appliances in the kitchen that had been burning for an extended period of time.
After a search confirmed noone was inside the home, firefighters started "overhaul operations" to make sure the fire had not spread to the attic.
While crews were completing the overhaul operations, a field fire was reported just after 1 p.m. on North County Road 1000 E and East County Road 550 N. Some firefighters were sent from the home fire to respond to the field fire.
According to the fire department, the field fire was intentionally set and was a violation of the Coles County burn ban. A UTV and brush truck were used to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading.
Both fires were contained and put out by 2:10 p.m. Nobody was injured in either incident.
