NOKOMIS, Ill. (WAND) — Nokomis schools will be closed Monday after severe storms caused damage near the schools and throughout Montgomery County Sunday night.

According to the Montgomery County Emergency Services Agency, severe weather caused damage in the eastern and southern parts of the county.

The Montgomery County EMA said the most heavily impacted areas appeared to be Witt, Nokomis, Coffeen and Raymond. 

The agency said reports started coming in around 6:30 p.m.

The Witt Fire Department reported extensive damage to the roof of the Witt Lions Club Building, and some campers in the general area.

The Nokomis Area Fire Protection District reported that several pieces of a steel roof had been blown off the east side of the Nokomis Junior High Gymnasium. Other damage was identified near the Nokomis High School/Junior High School campus.

Nokomis CUSD #22 said all Nokomis schools will be closed Monday, March 16, due to the storm damage.

The Montgomery County EMA said there were several reports throughout the county of power lines being taken down by the wind and falling branches.

Additional damage assessment will be done by the National Weather Service on Monday morning.
