DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Wednesday marked the first day of school in Decatur and Champaign, and Centennial High School has a special tradition to welcome its students back to the classroom.
The school does an annual clap-in, welcoming kids back to school on their first day.
"Being a champion for our children is a community effort and a community responsibility," said Centennial High School Principal Sara Sanders. "It's just one of the ways that we celebrate our students, and show our Chargers that they matter to us."
Decatur Public Schools also welcomed students with open arms. DPS Superintendent Dr. Rochelle Clark said she has many goals for the school year.
Her top priorities are academic improvement and meeting students where they are. Clark wants students to feel accepted, welcomed, cared for and loved as they walk in the door.
"We want our young students to know that they can be whatever they want in life," Clark said.
A major addition to Decatur Public Schools is an influx of new teachers.
"This year, we are welcoming over 70 new teachers. Over 40 are going to be, internationals," Clark added.
Clark said there is always room for improvement, and strengthening academics is at the top of the agenda.
School starts in Springfield on Monday, Aug. 18.
