DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — St. Teresa's High School received a $5,000 award from the WSOY Community Food Drive in partnership with their community partners and sponsors, placing first against other schools for the second year in a row.

Thanks to a donation from the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation, the final cash prizes were doubled.

In 1st place, St. Teresa's High School was awarded $5,000; in 2nd place, Mt. Zion High School was awarded $3,000; in 3rd place, St Patrick's School was awarded $2,000; in 4th place, Our Lady of Lourdes was awarded $1,500; and in 5th place, Maroa Forsyth High School was awarded $1,000.

Senior Class Council President Jonah Powell said the opportunity to give back to the community was valued highly by many students.

"I think that it is crucial for the development of good people that they had those experiences, that doing good can help people. Seeing that happen is important for someone to become a better person as they grow," Powell said.

Debbie Bogle, president of United Way of Decatur, said that 44% of Macon County families are ALICE families or are living in poverty, up from 40% two years ago.

"With more and more families and more and more of those families going to food pantries, the need is, is just larger than it's ever been," Bogle explained. "It is amazing that our community can stand up and come together and show up and support our community in that way. I don't know any other community that can say that."
