CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The University of Illinois Police Department requested a SWAT team and had multiple roads closed as they responded to an "ongoing criminal investigation" Thursday.
According to UIPD, officers were at a home in the 50 block of East Springfield Avenue executing a search warrant. They requested a SWAT team due to the potential of weapons and additional people inside.
Springfield Avenue between Neil Street and Second Street and First Street between Green Street and White Street were closed to set up a perimeter.
The roads have since been reopened, but the situation is still ongoing and police are asking the public to avoid the area. WAND is working to learn more.
