SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Salvation Army of central Illinois is asking for community support after recent winter weather has affected their Red Kettle campaign fundraising.
The Salvation Army said there have been multiple days when Red Kettles have been pulled in or have reduced hours for the safety of the ringers due to heavy snowfall and cold temperatures.
With less than ten days to go in the Red Kettle Christmas campaign, many local Salvation Army's said they are experiencing a shortfall in donations.
"In treacherous weather, people rely on the Salvation Army more," said Major Caleb Senn, the Salvation Army north and central Illinois general secretary. "When the weather is too harsh to support an outdoor kettle, we fall further behind in our fundraising goal."
The organization said the money raised in Red Kettles funds Salvation Army year-round programs and services, including shelters, food pantries, mobile feeding, after-school programs, and emergency utility assistance.
According to the organization, people can help from home by donating online at the Salvation Army website.
