MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) -- Interstate 57 was still backed up Saturday evening in Coles County after multiple crashes Saturday morning.

Illinois State Police said the crashes happened in both north and southbound lanes near mile marker 190, which is close to the Mattoon exit.

ISP responded to a multi-vehicle, fatal crash on I-57 southbound near milepost 193 just before 10 a.m. The road was closed for several hours. Police said it reopened just after 5:30 p.m., but traffic was still backed up and slow moving.

Illinois Department of Transportation cameras showed the road still had heavy traffic around 8:30 p.m.

ISP also said the right lane on I-57 northbound was closed due to a crash near milepost 191. It is unclear if anyone was hurt in that crash, but the lanes have since reopened. Police encourage drivers to take it slow when traveling through the area.
