SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A 14-year-old girl is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on I-55 southbound in Springfield.
ISP Troop 7 posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon that the crash happened in the southbound lanes near I-72, which is also the exit for Clearlake Avenue.Â
The Sangamon County Coroner confirmed a 14-year-old girl from Chicago was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
It's not clear how many vehicles were involved, or if there were other injuries or deaths.Â
Southbound traffic is being diverted at Exit 100, which is the Sangamon Avenue exit.Â
The road is expected to be closed for several hours.Â
Saturdays snow has significantly impacted travel across central Illinois. Law enforcement and county officials in several areas have been asking people to stay off the roads.Â
