DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A person died while in police custody following a multi-county pursuit Sunday night, according to Illinois State Police.Â
After an inquiry from WAND News on Monday, ISP said on Tuesday they were involved in a pursuit with a vehicle around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in McLean County. The pursuit ended in Logan County on Illinois 54.Â
ISP Spokeswoman Sgt. Melissa Albert-Lopez told WAND News the suspect in the vehicle was wanted for aggravated battery against a peace officer. The officer was with the Leroy Police Department. It's not clear if the officer was hurt or the circumstances surrounding the suspected battery.Â
ISP said after the pursuit that a person was taken into custody who "suffered a possible medical emergency." ISP said the person was taken to a hospital by ambulance where they were pronounced dead.
The name of the suspect has not been released. WAND News has reached out to the Logan County Coroner for additional information, including a cause of death. WAND News has also contacted the LeRoy Police Department.
Albert-Lopez said during the pursuit a trooper's car was damaged by the suspect's vehicle. No troopers were hurt.
ISP has not said where the pursuit ended on Illinois 54 in Logan County. It's also not clear how long the pursuit lasted or if police used special tactics or maneuvers to end the pursuit.
WAND News asked several follow up questions to ISP on Tuesday but was told answers to our questions would have to come from our Freedom of Information Act request.Â
That request is still pending.Â
This is a developing story.
